Death Magnetic is the 9th studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on September 12, 2008, through Warner Bros. Records. Kirk Hammett played a role in inspiring the anthology championship by bringing a photograph of deceased Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley to the studio where Metallica was recording. Expiry Magnetic debuted at #one on the Billboard 200, selling 490,000 copies in merely three days of availability.[100] It is the band'southward 5th consecutive studio album to debut at #i, making Metallica the first ring to have five consecutive studio anthology releases to do so. The album marked the highest first week sales for the grouping since 1996'south Load.[7] [101]

According to the September 27, 2008 issue of Billboard, Decease Magnetic landed at #ane on the following ten charts: Billboard 200, Billboard Comprehensive Albums, Superlative Rock Albums, Summit Hard Rock Albums, Top Modern Stone/Alternative Albums, Top Digital Albums, Top Internet Albums, Top European Albums, Tastemakers. "The Day That Never Comes" topped the Hot Mainstream Stone Tracks nautical chart.[102] The album stayed at #1 for three consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200, and spent 50 sequent weeks on said nautical chart.[103] Internationally, information technology peaked at #one in 34 countries, including Ireland, the UK, Canada and Australia.[104]

In addition, nearly 60,000 copies were sold digitally, making information technology debut at #1 on the Digital Album chart.[105] The album debuted at #ane on the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland albums chart subsequently three days of availability, selling 75,164 copies. It remained at #1 for two weeks and has sold over 150,000 copies to date.[106] In Canada, Decease Magnetic debuted at #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart.[107] It sold 81,000 copies in its first calendar week, making it the second best-selling debut album of 2008 in Canada.[108] It remained the #ane album for 4 consecutive weeks.[109] The anthology was certified 4x platinum in Canada in October 2009.[110]

In Australia, Death Magnetic was the fastest selling album of 2008, selling 55,877 copies in its first full week of release.[111] Death Magnetic was Australia's highest-selling tape in one week since Australian Idol winner Damien Leith'due south The Winner's Journey, in December 2006.[112] The same success was repeated in Federal republic of germany, where Death Magnetic has get the fastest selling album of 2008. Inside the beginning three days of the anthology's release, Decease Magnetic sold over 100,000 copies and has been certified platinum.[113] According to reports, Death Magnetic is outselling competitors in Russia and Turkey, two countries which do not have an official anthology chart.[114]

In Finland, during the second week of Jan 2009, Death Magnetic jumped eighteen spots dorsum up to #1 on that state'southward anthology charts within one week.[115]

Death Magnetic was certified 2x platinum (ii million units sold) by the RIAA on June 28, 2010.[116]
